The Vigilant Scout: Zosh's Scouting Journey

For many Scouts, the sound of a 6:00 a.m. alarm means the start of another full day at camp. For Zosh, a Life Scout from Plano, Texas, it means something more: a call to serve.
Each morning at summer camp, Zosh is one of the first Scouts up, bugle in hand, playing Reveille to wake his fellow Scouts. It is a fitting start for a young man whose Scouting journey has been shaped by cheerful service, outdoor adventure, and a steady commitment to helping others.
From Cub Scout to Vigil Honor
Zosh began his Scouting journey as a Cub Scout and has continued to grow through the program as a leader, camper, and member of the Order of the Arrow. As part of the Chawat Chapter, Zosh has embraced the OA’s call to service and brotherhood, earning the Vigil Honor, the highest recognition in the Order of the Arrow.
Whether he is helping with canteen service, hauling water coolers across camp, or serving in the dining hall for weeks at a time, Zosh understands that leadership in Scouting often happens behind the scenes.
“I take out the trash, clean the tables, prepare the coolers, and wash the dishes,” he said.
On the Trail at Philmont
In 2024, Zosh took on one of Scouting’s most iconic high-adventure experiences: a trek at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Hiking with a crew focused on Scouts with diverse abilities, Zosh served as Chaplain Aide, helping support his crew spiritually and emotionally along the trail.
Across rocky climbs, long days, and even a powerful storm that brought golf-ball-sized hail, Zosh stayed focused on his crew and the experience they were sharing together.
Adventure, Confidence, and the Scout Spirit
Zosh’s Scouting story is filled with moments that show confidence, courage, and joy in the outdoors. He remembers standing at Hell’s Gate at Possum Kingdom Lake after a long canoe trip from the Camp Constantin Jack D. Furst Aquatics Base, one of his favorite Scouting adventures. He remembers ziplining at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia and shouting, “I’m flying!” as he crossed above the trees.
“I like getting new people motivated to see if they’d like to go on a trek or come to summer camp,” he said.
The Next Adventure
Summer camp remains one of Zosh’s favorite places to serve. This summer, he returned to work at Camp Constantin, where he continues helping Scouts experience the same adventures and opportunities that shaped his own journey. In fact, he has already asked the camp director if he can return and work at camp again next year.
Now a 2024 high school graduate, Zosh is preparing for a new chapter through Project SEARCH, a program that provides job training and workplace skills for young adults with diverse abilities.
From playing Reveille at camp to serving fellow Scouts on the trail, Zosh’s story reflects the very best of Scouting. He leads with heart, serves with purpose, and encourages others to take on adventures of their own. Whether he is helping at Camp Constantin, motivating a new Scout, or preparing for his next challenge, Zosh reminds us that every Scout has something valuable to contribute and that a life of service can open doors to endless possibilities.
