Volunteer Spotlight – More Than a Skunk

Edited by Rich Lankford, National Office of Development

At Camp Hugh Taylor Birch in Yellow Springs, Ohio, Wolf Den Leader and Program Director Sidney Palomino has found a simple but powerful way to help Cub Scouts overcome fear.

With the help of a small stuffed skunk named Kit, Sidney guides young Scouts through challenges like climbing towers, trying new activities, and even weathering thunderstorms.

What begins as hesitation quickly turns into courage, as Scouts realize they are not alone and gain the confidence to try again.

Through creativity, empathy, and a little imagination, Sidney and Kit are helping Scouts feel safe, supported, and ready to take on the next adventure.

Volunteers like Sidney are what drive Scouting forward, creating meaningful experiences, building confidence, and shaping the next generation of leaders.
